Design concept for recycling pool noodles into furniture pieces
The Kimmel Center, located on Washington Square South and Laguardia Place, is a 10-story structure, designed with materials based on its surrounding neighborhood, Washington Square Park. These materials include glass, Vetter limestone, as well as Indiana limestone detailing. The building offers spectacular views of Washington Square Park and beyond, towards uptown New York City. It was designed by ©Roche Dinkeloo for New York University and completed in 2003. I have designed an open seating roof terrace for the Kimmel Center, which could serve as a green lounge/study space for the NYU community. A recent trip to Indonesia offered inspiration for my concept, which derived from the country’s stunning landscape and rice paddies. This led to my terracing design parti.
Madison Square Park, located between Fifth & Madison Avenues between 23rd & 26th Streets, strives to protect, nurture, and “foster moments of inspiration”. My design concept aims to promote the park's mission and would be constructed within the center grass area of the park.
My design is focused on adding communal seating areas to Madison Square Park which can promote collaboration and provide comfort. This concept derives from my time spent in Washington Square Park. The seating surrounding the dry fountain centralized in the park always served as a reliable spot to unwind between classes and gather with friends. The number of people I experienced congregating around the fountain enhanced the essence of community.
My designs were inspired by the “conversation pit” seating area. Conversation pits were a popularized design feature found in elegant homes during the 1950s-1970s.
